ECU Food Security Dashboard

Food security is a state in which enough safe and nutritious food is physically and economically available to a population.

Globally, approximately 2.4 billion people (nearly 30% of the world population) are experiencing food insecurity (Murtoff, J., n.d.).

The scale and severity of the crisis have intensified in recent years, with 295.3 million people across 53 countries experiencing acute food insecurity in 2024, triple the number recorded in 2016 (Gustafson, S. & Vos, R., 2025).

Key drivers of food insecurity include protracted conflict, which disrupts production and trade; climate-related shocks such as droughts and floods which can affect crops, livestock, and the transportation of food; economic instability marked by inflation and currency devaluation; and forced displacement, which leaves millions dependent on diminishing humanitarian assistance (Reuters, 2025; World Food Programme, n.d.).
